| A Brief History of Western
Gardens By 3000 B.C. the Egyptians had developed gardens involving sophisticated irrigation methods. When the Persians conquered Egypt in 525 B.C. they were exposed to the early garden prototypes, which became the basis for their own garden traditions and, subsequently, that of their Moslem conquerors. The paradise garden was in turn shown in Greece, Rome and throughout Europe. The idea was carried to India by the Mongols and to Spain by the moors and from there, many centuries later, to the Americans by Spanish explorers and clergy. In the 12th century, after the last of the barbarian invasions, European nobles started to build pleasure gardens. By 15th century, the early Renaissance villas appeared in Italy resembling the Roman models: symmetrical, enclosed by clipped hedges, and adorned with statues. Water was later employed lavishly in fountains and cascades. In 1945, 22 Italian artists and gardeners were brought to France by their invaders to remodel French gardens. Under Louis XIV, the French garden style reached its zenith. Its masterpiece, Versailles, was copied by many, including Peter the Great's Peterhof. Most European gardens were built in the French manner except in Holland where everything were miniaturized and flowers remains a major feature. French and Dutch garden styles continued to influence English gardeners until the 18th century when their new landscape school of gardening concept revolutionized the art. This has profound influence on gardening in Europe and the United States. We at Nautilus Imports & Exports offer a great variety of garden elements to our customers.
